UHF Cognitive Networks Alliance (CogNeA)
I was just emailed a press release announcing the formation of an industry group to define a protocol (PHY / MAC) for white space data networks.
They hope to have a draft standard for comment available in the first half of 2009.
Since I don’t have an external link, I’ve put the press release below the fold.
Industry Leaders Launch UHF Cognitive Networks Alliance
San Francisco—December 16, 2008—The Cognitive Networking Alliance (CogNeA) today announced that it will help drive the definition and adoption of an industry-wide standard for low power personal and portable devices to operate over TV White Spaces in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) television bands. Members of the Alliance include some of the most influential players in the consumer electronics, personal computing, home entertainment, semiconductor and digital imaging spaces. The Board of Directors consists of: representatives from ETRI, HP, Philips, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Texas Instruments. The Contributor Members are Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC) at Georgia Institute of Technology and Motorola.
The CoGNeA standard is intended to serve a broad range of applications, including internet access for communities and in-home High Definition Multi-Media networking and distribution. The standard is expected to provide consumers with powerful networking solutions that can take advantage of the excellent propagation characteristics of UHF band signals. Superior wall penetration, extended range and improved coverage will yield cost effective networking solutions, both indoors and outdoors.
The standard will be based on Cognitive Radio technology operating over TV White Spaces , and is being defined in compliance with regulatory rules that have been announced by the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) action dated November 4, 2008, by Second Report and Order (FCC 08-260). The Alliance intends to bring the standard to an international status in collaboration with an existing Standards Definition Organization.
“The CogNeA Alliance unites many influential players in the consumer, semiconductor and PC industries in a unified effort to develop a standard for wireless multimedia networking in the home as well as broadband internet access in rural areas,” said Kursat Kimyacioglu, the chairman of CogNeA.
The Alliance has already completed the steps of defining a Marketing Requirements Document and a Technical Requirements Document for the mentioned applications. The Technical Committee is currently defining the standard for the CogNeA Common Radio Convergence Platform. The platform consists of a Physical Layer (PHY) and a Media Access Layer (MAC). The alliance intends to open a draft standard to public comments in the first half of 2009.

Currently, Pat Carson is scheduled to talk a bit about Cognea at the CRWG / Secoindary Spectrum Tasking Joint break-out at the SDRF Meeting in San Diego on Wednesday morning.
I’ll try to post the relevant information.
It was also a bit odd to me that no-one else published the press release. I checked again with the guy I got it from and he said it was ok to post, so I don’t know what’s going on with the press release.
